" At what point is it okay to tell your friends and family members how to raise their kids. You know and when you see them doing something that you just feel like is absolutely wrong. How do you go about saying to -- should try something a little different for instance African girlfriend he has a few kids. And the older kids are severely overweight okay severely overweight. And she -- young ones who work really just toddlers and preschool and so there's a chance for them to not be really overweight if she were to. Really watch there what they're eating and their health Bryant and I see the older kids and I feel bad for them because. You know it's like at what point you look in the -- one -- you relies on my passion overweight you know because when -- when you feel like you were born that way. At what point you noticed this you know -- eight or 9101112. At what age do you think little girls notice on my gosh. I'm actually bigger girl and a probably are on the aids around eight or counties and in so I think that she noticed at around eight because they can check she went her mom and said mom -- on a diet in all the girls are telling him big. Well of course she wasn't born overweight what happened when she was fed food. From the time that she was born you know because obviously it's not hurt choice she's eight. So it's not her choice to be eating twinkies for dessert every night or. You know deep fried foods everyday and all these foods that are gonna maker over rates -- essentially wakes up one day and little kids at school -- saints were on your big girl. And -- gets old Arnold Arnold or how she schools to control her weight it's not her choice you know when when your kids your fed whatever your parents Biggio. So now she's older. An overweight. And it's struggling with her -- struggling with her her body image at school struggling with all these things and you know. When I look back I think there are a lot of people were overweight but most those overweight people can think back to a time when there were things and right but it's when he. Seven year old woman might say all -- when I was 171819. I was a size five right I act and act and then they realize well but I made a string of choices right had a baby or something break yeah. Lots of Ben and Jerry just and now I've gained thirty or forty pounds or something that they can think back to when I was Stanton all I wore those jeans in that was fun about a block. But what happens when your little girl when you -- a lot because you in your parents Fiji fried food all the time you don't remember when you reverence and because you never worked right in. So now she's just. Teenager and overweight and her mother has the opportunity. With little children. To change their habits so that they don't. And -- curse -- with being overweight without it being down. You know it's like one thing when it was viewed it did it to yourself okay. There's no data blank out it -- yourself and Ben and Jerry. But when you grow up that way because your parents kept feeding you that then you know at one point. You're gonna wake up you a look at America my gosh I have this hundred pounds to lose. I didn't do this to myself my parents did this to me like a burden to put on your kids right. So some -- to me wants to say to my friend hey. Don't give them French Fries don't -- your four year old little -- the French Fries because you know high year old girl asked and she struggles how difficult that is for her. Don't curse you're younger one with the same problem at your very first year older on went."

Don't let them dipped their French Fries in the -- Don't even -- and the French Fries put it down no ice cream for the kids like it's not -- ruining them because. I I couldn't even imagine. Waking up looking in the mere ten years old and saying why Powell. Larry have forty pounds a -- and I Pakistani."

" I think you're gonna run into our problem if you say something because you don't have kids. You know an easy here to say don't let the -- says that it there are whining and obviously. Little girl's gonna wanna twinkie or when he got -- target they're gonna want the bad frozen pizza out what I heard as you know it's hard to say no all the time. So I think that you'll run into a problem with -- Hillary you -- that you don't even have been if you had kids I don't know how you would see that."

" Yeah exactly how would you approach somebody and say. You know I really think you make better choices for your kids. It's hard. And -- these choices unfortunately are not. You know the choices are making a feeding their kids these are gonna plague their children for the rest of their lives. And we know how much women struggle with weight we diet you know how many 88% of women -- diet at all times. No how could you imagine being played with -- from the time your ten. Looking in the -- and other kids -- laugh next time you debate can't and you can even feature so all that dude your parents. That's a shame. I don't even know how do you go about -- to the parents -- you're ruining your little girls -- your son's life like they're gonna have emotional problems. And a struggle with dieting for the rest of their -- if you don't. Stop you've got to. Tell them they got to put down a French Fries get on some celery some broccoli -- fat yum. In our but and I mean all that screaming and crying that the kids are gonna do say. -- it's better than the screaming and crying they're gonna do later on their -- I hate myself. What would you rather have them cry about. But I don't know how to go about saying to my friends. Feed your kids that are food please because I don't wanna see them. Played with this life long struggle that's gonna just be damaging to them emotionally. And physically and physically -- and physically. " I I think you can't bring it up you know obviously in that light. Com that there is a great documentary called for matters. And it kind of takes the approach of what's in the American diet and what didn't. So I've heard it from my family and if she's -- her children that I have problems as they grow up. And further down and they're like second don't have health problems that. Happening. It's a hard subject to talk to somebody about it I mean I think it -- letting you know it's just out of concern but her and her children. I think that she would be okay with that."

" Yeah it's just so tough too because like you said when it's when it's something you learn your entire life sometimes thinks you are eating healthy when you're really not like if -- to follow around. A really thin person you'd realize that. Their idea of -- is different you know I mean yeah. It is really difficult to learn those things that you think -- was -- healthy but not when you drenched sheet."

" I think would most of us think it hazing we think. Something that happens within fraternities in college don't think gel yeah -- the majority of the time we think of -- you think of frat. Eating and doing stupid drinking games in fact there were big list of hazing practices that have been reported some on have been. One -- be cool which is potential new members are doused with gallons of ice water while powerful fans -- cold here on them until they were completely dry. Yeah and some cases of potential new members naked -- to stand once thought I'd imagine you could potentially be harmed by the anti freezing cold water. Freezing fans. Another one washboard abscess is one I've heard about happening in sororities quite a bit. This is where female potential new members are sat naked on a washing machine. And the sister circled the fat -- any fat that -- they say this is which after -- before you can become a sister here our sorority. Or they'll or even an in a lot of cases they won't how to set on a washing machine to stand there it is in their bikinis or something encircle all the fat -- It's you know mental abuse basically -- telling these girls they're fat no wonder they have high rates of anorexia -- yeah horrible. And another one of course alcohol a lot of people think of that would they think it hazing shots is a game it's a potential new members. Are forced to drink shops for every time they could not perfectly recite the organization's motto and create. High alcohol poisoning. Branding this one a stupid. This is where potential new members forced to endure letter branding members take a wire hanger molded into the organization's Greek letters dipped it and fire and burn them holding onto a hidden area of the new members scan. And as our ports and as our producer can point that it says well that's really Stephen because now there's evidence. About China. Plus a nanny wrote four books on -- he says it's just really one step away from bullying but another -- he says you know it's really not all that bad. That there's actually some good can come from hazing actually kind of agree with that. I don't think all hazing -- data I think that it's about. Five to 10% that's really stupid and bad people need to learned that I myself was -- in fact. 40% of students who -- if you Dan Hayes -- haste before they even hit college I was case my freshman year of high school when I. I like to admit this but I was a cheerleader. -- ha -- And when I made the squad that it senior cheerleaders showed up at my house at dawn. Kidnapped me basically I was in my to jam as messy hair no make up all that right which is like a freshman nightmare put a sign on me -- I'm in new freshman cheerleader. Took all of us freshman -- in the grocery store has play LeapFrog in the aisles. And then took us to school I knew the job -- dirty hair and no make up and bad breath and we had to go to class -- date in our pajamas. You know what the teachers were in on that the adviser was in on that our parents were in on that because they were called the night before to tell us. To tell them that. Is that we get we were to be picked up that's how we found out we made the squat. Was when they showed happening they did all of that and we were the signs and I balloons attached to assaulting a I really think that was bad I you know I mean sure it was slightly humiliating but it wasn't dangerous in any way and in the vast majority of hazing. " Well we found that it did happen Greek life but it happened -- not trying to student activities at the college level and at a high school level. So with Kathleen more than that's reflected."

" I'm well we found that athletes varsity athletes what the common place. And imports increased -- it happened but it also happened in places like on our club. And other kind of intramural club on campuses then and then other performing arts groups. I'm still really like -- a wide range of student activities and groups."

" Okay so what percentage of students have actually experienced hazing is it just a very small percent I mean. Greek life is typically about 10% at a college campuses about 10% of students that are experiencing hazing."

" I know we can much more it was about 55% of the students actually had experienced that -- in behavior. And those first student that belongs to some kind of group."

" Allow what do you consider hazing behavior."

" I'm what we say it's anything that's expected of someone to join not participate in a group. That humiliate degrade -- drinking or endanger them and that's regardless of the person's willingness to participate which is often hard. Concepts for young people to --"

" So what. It of the people the 55% who -- Hayes. Did you find that most of them felt like the hazing was really abusive and dangerous."

" No actually may have them felt like. It was either tradition or it wasn't all that bad or it was pretty harmless. Or you know it was no big deal we heard a lot of those kinds of things on student."

" Did you agree let them after after doing a study did you feel like a lot of it was just harmless."

" Well it certainly is you know smaller accept hazing where -- not as much potential for harm. But it's often difficult. To gauge how harmful something can be either mentally or emotionally to somebody. And oftentimes. College student under estimate the physical rest in -- and some other things that they do."

" did a lot of the students before they were -- know that they were going to be haste."

" Well interestingly we asked you know were you aware of that -- behaviors. In this in the group you actually before joining us about a third of them said yes they were somewhat aware of that they take years."

" Only a third I'm actually shocked by that. Yeah I would only more would now -- I think more we know just because it you know traditionally if you're going to go into an organization at least some of the older members with daily -- when I join this is what they did demean others like a little bit at -- affect us around."

" Yeah an accident that some pressure on organizations to. He would keep up what they theater or cause you know traditions of the organizations."

" Right okay. After doing this study what was the most surprising thing that you came across."

" That most surprising thing for me was that. Students to experience that hazing a large number of them just didn't even identifiable as hate that they wouldn't associate network with the -- The haters that they had been involved --"

" You know I didn't even realize that I'd been -- Intel I was preparing to talk about this tonight on the show. I was taste when I was a freshman cheerleader had no idea that it was hazing -- really started thinking about it more because. Aren't what I read a statistic that about 40% of students have experienced hazing even before getting to college. I thought while he was -- part that 47%. Sure an -- I was. But the -- I went through wasn't dangerous I mean slightly humiliating because we had to go to school on average Amma has with no make up and -- breath. But it wasn't dangerous except the people sitting next to me I haven't talked to. Until what --"

" About 55% of all college students experience hazing. In some fashion with the size Hank -- he's the author of four books on hazing among them broken pledges. The deadly ride of hazing and they hazing reader. He's also an associate professor. At Franklin College tying Hank. How are you excellent thank you so you think that hazing is really just kind of one step away from bullying."

" I I do it that there is a difference in that -- Is to get into a group -- your new cover you'll do anything to want to be long -- can happen anytime anyplace that's. It and if there's anything supposedly good about -- it's too welcome you into a group it whether it's in a perverse way or. In in a minor -- making you aware of silly things where bullying it's is simply to humiliate you."

" Right and to kind of send you away from the group. Differently it is tightly you may may be deterred you would -- pariah right okay so there is some benefit to hazing is -- it they not a welcoming but. You say the --"

" Problem is that the benefit two the the dangers can outweighed the did the benefit of getting people into the group there's more positive ways and mentoring ways. To welcome people -- group with no one hurt and no hard feelings deadly using -- Well this year the kind of ever fingers crossed and that it's the first year there's not been a collegiate death. Do they hazing since 1970 and some years eight or nine deaths so you often because alcohol involved. So this of this property. Big year and that maybe some people are getting the message about raising."

" Yeah so and typically the deaths are related to alcohol."

" Are -- yes about 82%. And the others would be accidents taking people aren't kidnappings and they get hit by a drunk driver or you know paddling and beating. So that's and then that's those are kind of a trusting in the people don't know their own strengths don't know that beatings can actually. Killed because they went through it themselves and survived it."

" Yeah I actually read that a lot of sororities are doing now."

" It exactly and there's there's been kind of an upswing but there's been a couple reported that Latino. And African American sorties and in male fraternity of all kinds."

" Where some of the differences between high school and college hazing."

" It's good question because -- school -- is kind of more to it gotten much more violent since about 1982. When it started tracking -- these things. And those who have been ratcheting up since about 95. We're this year we've seen a couple of cases of Fidelity's. With -- sodomy and so for now that the athletic level. And it's been a hot that he appeared here in Indiana where I live that Kabul -- school where a victim of or -- The alleged victim of a sexual teasing. Had the perpetrators getting off with no jail time."

" Why do people even think that's okay. When it comes to hazing reader why -- anything dangerous."

" That they went through it themselves. And if you went through it and and is it had no meaning or. You were kind of an idiot for going through it -- out you. " So -- do you think that we should be stopping all forms of hazing."

" I do it and I think there and point fingers we should be sporting that the commissioners of sport. Major League sport pro football sport where this -- kids are seeing this and not understanding there's -- disconnect there but that. What the pro athletes are doing is going to stop short. Sexual hazing and so forth for the most part. Whereas -- high school level it's anything goes and they're not mature enough to stop the."

" Right and it always we saw in the death of Matt Carrington at Chico state. That students were not giving him alcohol that night they were giving him tons and tons of water -- disturb the chemistry in his body. As the students if you tell them not do one thing they'll find another way to days."
